Pre-Season Newsletter

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

The week between Christmas and New Year's is one of my favorite times of year. I like to use this week to reflect on my past training year and set new intentions for the year ahead! I encourage you to do the same. Write down answers to the following questions:

What am I most proud of this year?

What experience did I gain?

What lessons did I learn?

What was my biggest heartache?

What was my biggest triumph?

What challenged me?

What inspired me?

Much like the Columbus Marathon picks a theme for their race, I like to take all of the answers from those questions & narrow them down into a word or phrase that will act as a central theme for my training block.

My theme for the Winter/Spring training block for 2024 is Stay Steady.

So, what will yours be?

Snowmageddon, Polar Vortex, Alberta Clipper, Nor’easter: It does not have to be a blizzard for it to be cold, windy, nasty outside.

If you’re not a treadmill enthusiast, then you’ll want to know more about how to run safely in the cold winter weather. Today we will concentrate on running away from hypothermia and how to breathe in the cold.

WHAT IS "TRAIN YOUR BRAIN?"

Last season we realized that Fleet Feet and Fit For Life Physical Therapy have made
almost everything available to MIT participants. Expert shoe and gear outfitting, in-
house physical therapy expertise, our amazing training plans & group workouts, nutrition counseling, & volunteer opportunities! Almost everything. But what about the psychological aspects of half & full marathon training?

This is where "Train Your Brain" was born! In bi-weekly installments, we provide resources on the ever-important mental and emotional health component of race preparation, group workout participation, and injury rehabilitation. These articles are authored by MIT coaches and participants with wonderful experiences to share, curated by Dr Heather Bechtel.

Attached is this week’s article by Nita Sweeney – Mental and Emotional
Benefits of Training in a Group (it’s not just about performance).
