WEEK 16 - RACE WEEK!
Happy Race Week, MIT.
There is a LOT of important information in this newsletter regarding race day so please read thoroughly!
But first, let's take a step back... Because just like that, another season of MIT is behind us.
You've logged hundreds of miles. You've (probably) gone through a pair of running shoes or two. You've shivered in the snow. You've waded through giant puddles (Ok, maybe just Pace Coach Brian). You've hit major milestones. And because we're human, you've probably had a disappointment or two.
All of these experiences throughout the season have led up to this moment. When you toe the line to see what you're made of. Whether that is grit or joy or friendship or consistency -- This weekend, you will show up for yourself. And I'm proud of you.
I hope you reach your goals.
I hope you find a strength within that surprises you.
I hope you find confidence and grit in the hard moments.
Most of all, I hope you find joy.
Take it all in, MIT. You've got this!
As a reminder, Coach Jeanne and Coach Dylan will be running the show in my absence along Holly & The Fleet Feet Team. Because I will be out of town and away from my email, please make sure to send any race day questions to Coach Jeanne at jeanne@fleetfeetcolumbus.com.

TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
Mental Preparation for Race Day, by Dr. Heather Bechtel
MIT, you have put in all the work for your race. You’ve done your miles and tested your gear. Your body is prepared for a great day! But what else can you do to ensure you will have a good race? You also need your brain in shape to achieve your goals. So, how do you prepare your brain to help you do your best?
-
Review the race course map. In particular, look for large elevation changes, water stations, first aid tents, and any major landmarks along the way.
-
Do you and your training partners plan to go together, or is everyone free to “run their own race?” Make sure everyone is on the same page ahead of time.
-
Do you know how you might feel at a start line? Are you a nervous starter who needs to calm down? Or do you like to be “pumped up” at the start line? Do you want music, mantras, plans with friends or something else to accomplish this?
-
How will you feel at the landmarks listed above? Again, will you want music, mantras, or other plans to put yourself in the right headspace?
-
If you have support people and spectators, ask where they will be. Can they meet you somewhere where you might need a mental boost? Will they have a special sign or treat for you (if allowed)?
-
If you have a chance, do you want to drive or run or walk some portion of the course ahead of time? Some prefer to know exactly what the “lay of the land” is, while others prefer the novelty of the scenery as extra motivation.
Every person is going to have different answers to the questions above, and that’s why you should consider this for yourself. If this is your first race, asking coaches, pacers and experienced MITers for advice can be very helpful. Go get your goals, and we will see you on the course!
MIT UP NEXT: EARTH DAY LITTER PICKUP
THANK YOU, EVERYONE!
We had a great time on Sunday doing our part to keep our playground clean 🌎🏃♀️🏃♂️
Thanks to these awesome MIT Members and coaches who spent their Sunday afternoon on the Olentangy Trail picking up litter! Who wants to guess how much Gu/Gel trash we found out there?! This ain't a race. Toss your empty Gu packets in the garbage. 🙏🗑
Keep your eyes peeled in the Off Season for more information on group runs, events, and socials!
BOSTON MARTHON
CONGRATS TO ALL MIT MEMBERS WHO RAN BOSTON!
Congratulations to several of our members and coaches who ran the 128th Boston Marathon yesterday!
This mighty crew not only showed a tremendous amount of GRIT in rather warm conditions, but a whole ton of heart in the way they carried with them the memory of their close friend and fellow MIT member, Paul Stoodley, by writing his BIB number 17303 on their bodies in his honor.
We were so grateful to have such a wonderful crew of runners and humans representing MIT on their journey from Hopkinton to the finish line on Boylston. If you see them, give them a big smile and warm congrats!
